Writers' Guild Hosts
On Tuesday, May 27 from 7:30-9:30 pm professional musicians Kent Schoch, Kevin Short, Ed Shockley, Pete Slayer, and Stuart Vining, will gather for a night of food, drink and song at Beseme in downtown Lewes. The event is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Writers' Guild, a 501 c(3) association that supports and encourages all forms of creative writing.
"The Night of Songs and Stories," will be moderated by Terry Plowman, the publisher of Delaware Beach Life magazine and himself a musician, who, with help from the audience— will pose questions to the musicians—everything from "what cover song do you play in a completely different style from the original recording?" to "what was the most difficult song you ever wrote and why?". The musicians take turns responding to in a round table style by playing the song (and telling the story) that best answers each question.
Kent Schoch, the newest musician on the scene, is known for his song, "Junk Food Journey," which played on NPR's "Car Talk." A regular at local music venues, Schoch is currently finishing his first CD, Ohio, scheduled for release in July 2008.
Ed Shockley has been in the entertainment business for over thirty years; as a musician, singer, songwriter and producer. In the late 70's, his band Jack of Diamonds was the most popular band on the local and regional music scene, with his song, "Dodge City," becoming an anthem to music fans in the mid-Atlantic region. After moving to New York Ed, along with his band Cries, signed a major record deal with RCA, and two of his songs made the hit parade in Scandinavia. Ed has also appeared on stage and television, and his songs and voice have been used in commercials on TV and radio as both a singer and announcer. He has published over 35 songs and is currently promoting his latest CD (the third with his band Vinyl Shockley), 'Keep Singing', which has been described as "their finest yet" and "a successful balancing act combining retro elements with fresh new songs where Wilco meets Al Green meets Steely Dan."
Stuart Vining and Pete Slayer have been performing together for over twenty-five years and are frequent "guests" of the Famous Shockley brothers. Vining was a member of the popular "Big Hat No Cattle" for years, and continues to perform with them at Irish Eyes in Milton.
Kevin Short, of MSA Studios in Georgetown, a voting member of the recorded music academy, is also a musician, as well as a producer, and sound engineer who has been in the music business for over 25 years. He has worked extensively with each of the three performing musicians, and as a special feature will sing a song written by the other three musicians.
This will be the guild's first event at Beseme (which means "kiss me" in Spanish,) located at 142 Second and Market streets in downtown Lewes. There is plenty of nearby parking and throughout the evening attendees are invited to eat and drink from Beseme's eclectic and reasonably priced menu which features everything from sweet squash soup, to various gourmet hamburgers to crepes to elegant salads. For more information about Beseme go to www.beseme.biz.

Free Writes
Free Write! is the name given to an informal gathering of writers of ALL skill levels who meet to practice their writing in a friendly and nurturing atmosphere. The goal of the Free Writes! is to provide a place and an opportunity for people to have fun with their writing, to explore different genres, and to do this in the company of other writing enthusiasts. Each Free Write! is facilitated by a Rehoboth Beach Writers? Guild member who has experience in teaching, writing and/or leading such groups. Participants write prose, songs, poetry and fiction, work on novels during free writes, start short stories. Writing Prompts are often (but not always) designed to focus on a particular aspect of writing: the use of sensory details, the necessity of strong verbs, the craft of writing dialogue? Bring paper and pen or a laptop and join us as often as you can. This event is free and open to anyone who is interested. No RSVP required.
