Boot Camp (def.: short, disciplined training) |
Sarah Barnett and Maribeth Fischer are hosting Saturday morning “Boot Camp” instead of FreeWrites at the Rehoboth Beach Library. Boot Camp is not about reading your work out loud, not about getting praise or criticism, not about entertaining your fellow writers. Boot camp is about you putting words on the page, whether you are working on a novel, memoir, brainstorming new ideas, or starting a poem. We’ll offer two 35-minute blocks of uninterrupted writing time, with a fifteen-minute break between (allowing us the chance to socialize). But most of Boot Camp will be silent, as we work in an internet-free zone, focused solely on our work.
For each 35-minute block of time, we’ll suggest a word to jumpstart new ideas. For instance, if we give the word "money," you might begin an essay about the year you spent waitressing, or you might write a scene in your novel where the characters are arguing about money, or maybe you’ll hone a poem about your grandfather pulling a nickel from your ear. Perhaps the next word will be "kitchen, or "tree..." The goal is to dedicate time to write. |
